Christ Lutheran Church

Welcome!

Many people enter the virtual doorway to our church here on the Web before coming through the actual doors. Either way, we extend the same welcome. We want you to feel at ease, look around, explore and ask questions.

As you check out this site or come to visit us for worship, we trust you will find Christ Lutheran to be an active community of faith where there is a place to make life-long friends while enhancing a life-long relationship with Christ.

Through faith in Jesus and with the instruction of the Holy Scriptures we receive the promise of heaven and the fullest, most liberating lifestyle here on earth. This is the message we wish to share with you.

Mission

History

Christ Lutheran Church was established as a mission congregation in Columbia, Howard County, Maryland in 1992. Our nearly 100 members come from all over the area and many different walks of life.

We chose as our symbol a great tree - vibrant with leaves and rooted in Christ, our Lord and Savior. "I am the vine." Jesus told us, "and you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5).

As Lutherans, we believe that we and all people have been infected with a terminal disease called sin, which has caused a broken relationship with our Creator. We believe that only through trust in the innocent life and death of Jesus Christ can anyone be saved from our sin and its consequences and restored to a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven. We believe that the Bible was directly inspired by the Holy Spirit and is the only authority in matters of faith and doctrine, and we share with all Christians the beliefs expressed in the ancient Trinitarian ecumenical creeds (Apostle's Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed). We have an old expression: "Saved by grace alone, through faith in Jesus Christ alone, through God's Word alone." We'd be happy to share all that this means with you!

Christ Lutheran is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod  (WELS, for short), a nationwide and international Lutheran church body, which began in 1850. Today, WELS is the third largest Lutheran church body in America that has grown to more than 1,200 congregations (just in North America); it has over 400,000 baptized members served by more than 1,000 pastors. After much work and many years, Christ Lutheran Church has finally moved into a home of its own. While we have appreciated the relationships we've formed at the Owen Brown Community Center in Columbia, where we have met on Sunday mornings for more than a decade, we recognized long ago that to effectively serve our community and to do all the things we have been called to do we needed our own facility.

Our education hour begins Sunday morning at 11:00. We offer an adult Bible study, a teen Bible study, and Sunday School classes for younger children. At 09:30 we hold our worship service, a modern setting of the traditional Lutheran liturgy. The congregants and choir sing hymns of praise chosen each week to accompany and support the Bible readings and the sermon. Our members celebrate the Lord's Supper on the first and third Sundays of the month. (for more on our worship, please click here: worship and fellowship ).
